Dripdry Doublecross (Well, Almost)

After a week-long of pessimistic weather reports, the second WCBC major supported event of year, the Doublecross Metric, had surprisingly good weather. Cloudy with one short downpour, the conditions were, well almost, excellent: No wind, few flies, good protective cloud cover and pleasant temperatures.

For the first time, the Doublecross did not preset arrows on the route. Ride with GPS (RWGPS) digital routes and printed paper version with cues were provided. Roadside signs for rest stops were still employed. The support staff did not note any negative feedback about not using road route arrows. A bit of whimsy occurred when some cyclists, who were following blue arrows from the Lions Club’s Bike to the Bay, briefly wandered off course and onto a Doublecross rest stop.

The downer of the pre-event weather report did adversely affect attendance. A total of 132 cyclists registered with 89 attending. Special shoutout to the new retiree who came from Texas to participate as well as other well-traveled representatives from the Kentucky and Michigan.

First-time Doublecross Metric Director Daniel del Busto said he was pleased with both how the volunteers stepped up and and how well the ride was perceived by participants. After helming his first major supported event, Daniel is already promising some improvements for next year.
