Back It Up

Rim cracked? Guest in town? Streets littered with storm debris? An inexpensive backup bicycle may be just what the bike doctor ordered.

Choosing a refurbished bicycle can be a great way to sample a new discipline like touring or gravel. A used bike is a solid choice for commuting for errands or work. Plus, it’s always good to have a backup when one’s prime-time bike is out of service.

While area bike shops provide premium quality stock, refurbished and inexpensive bicycles can be purchased from 2 local non-profit organizations, the Newark Bike Project (NBP) and Urban Bike Project (UBP). Both groups offer a variety affordable road bikes with “most in the $200-$600 range.”

Better still, all purchases from both charities benefit the local communities. Since 2011, NBP has “helped more than 4,000 people with repairs, 6,000 bikes recycled back into the community”. UBP, which began in 2005, has supported “Wilmington communities by providing access to bicycling as a healthy, affordable and practical means of transportation and recreation.”
