Grab Your Bike!

It’s National Bicycle Month and a plethora of WCBC biking activities are available. First, our Ride Calendar is full of weekly and special opportunities. Check the calendar to join fellow Club members on the roads for local rides.

If you’re participating in the Delaware Gran Fondo on Sunday, May 17, look for the WCBC canopy. Located at the Delaware Museum of Nature and Science, the event’s first rest stop will be staffed by Club volunteers. Do stop by, grab some refreshments and say hello. If you are not participating in the Gran Fondo, we are still looking for 2 more volunteers. Contact WCBC Vice President Bill Ebbott if you like to assist.

Also looking for volunteers is the Wilmington Grand Prix Criterium Races & Festival on May 16. WCBC President Emeritus J.W. Haupt said, “I was course marshal for the Time Trial l (TT) race–when I didn’t race it–for many years and had a lot of fun supporting the event.” J.W. emphasized that “local cycling community support” is vital for the event’s continuing in our area.

The Wilmington Grand Prix weekend offers several chances to ride. Pin a number for the Monkey Hill Time Trial or Criterium Races. Join fellow cyclists for the more lesiurely Major Taylor Community Ride and Governor’s Ride as well as the Delaware Gran Fondo.

The League of American Bicyclists, a non-profit organization of which WCBC is a member, is promoting a variety of events and opportunities. National Bike to School Day is May 6. Bike to Work Day is May 15 with Bike to Work Week on May 11-17.

The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) and Delaware Bicycle Council along with Delaware Bicycle Council, DelDOT Bicycle Program and Sussex Cyclists are sponsoring the annual Legislative Bike to Dover on Wednesday, May 13.
