Savoring the Savage

The Savage Century never ceases to throw down the challenges. If more than 7,000 feet of climbing is not enough, the 2023 supported ride event had rain and wind adding to the mix.

“You get bragging rights all year for this ride,” said participant Helga Yang.

Fifty-six of the 97 registered answered the call to navigate routes of 40, 60, 80 or 100 miles. Sixteen earned the coveted “I Climbed the Hills” patch for completing 100 miles.

But the event was more than the physical and mental tests. Being with family and friends was also part of the day. Major Taylor Cycling Club of Philadelphia had several members participating. WCBC member and Bike Newark Kevin Monaghan and his toddler daughter covered 20 miles in a Dutch cargo bicycle, the bakfiet.

After all the literal ups and downs of the day, what did most riders say as they wrapped up the day?

“See you next year.”

Some folks just love a challenge.
