Take the Exit:  Trail Expansion Open

With sunshine as a backdrop and bicycles at the ready, the ribbon was cut on the Jack A. Markell Trail (JAM) expansion. The paved “Exit One” extension provides access to Commons Boulevard—a high density employment area.  The new access stems from the JAM tunnel under I-295 to the Social Security Office on Creekwood Road in New Castle.

This exit is the first of five planned expansions and costed $700,000. The trail land was provided by Delmarva Power and real estate development company Harvey Hanna. Funding came from Delaware Greenways, William Penn Foundation, and Delaware State Parks. Bike Delaware, which WCBC has long supported, was a key and persistent figure making this implementation a reality.

WCBC Treasurer and committed cycling commuter Marty Lessner represented the Club at the ceremony. See Marty’s response to the trail opening in this WDEL Video| New trail extension also extends recreational, commuting options.
